Join us for tons of sewing fun! Licensing is a unique experience, blending the love of sewing with skill-building and business opportunity. Whether or not you share what you’ve learned in a sewing classroom, you’ll enjoy the robust collection of techniques and projects curated especially for this licensing. As you hone your own sewing skills with videos to support more than 30 different projects, you’ll pick up tips for teaching the projects to others: children, teens and adults. And, you can do it all in the comfort of your own home, on your own schedule, using your own machine. What could be more perfect?

Projects in this licensing curriculum focus on basic and intermediate techniques used in making quilts, home décor items, clothing, bags, accessories and more. If you’re an accomplished sewist yourself, you will find these projects are ideal for quick, easy gifts, as well as a perfect pallet for adding more advanced techniques and creative embellishments. There are even projects designed specifically for teaching children and teens!

The Beginning Sewing: A Teacher’s Course Licensing Event course will prepare you to teach all the essential sewing skills with confidence, sharing the best methods and techniques with your students as you use a tried-and-true curriculum. You will hear from the Martha Pullen faculty, too, about building a fulfilling and profitable sewing education business. All project patterns and directions are included, and you will have licensing privileges from the day you receive your license. This means you will share copyright privileges with the Martha Pullen Company, allowing you to make any of the projects for sale without limit or, if you are teaching, make as many copies of the project patterns and instructions as you need for your students.

Projects in each licensing collection are unique to that particular licensing, so no one else will have your projects other than the students who are licensed in the same curriculum. If you choose to teach, holding a Martha Pullen License will open teaching doors that might not otherwise be available to you.

During this six-month course, you will correspond with the Martha Pullen Licensing faculty, who will be available to answer any question you might have about projects, patterns, techniques and teaching methods. Even though you will receive more than 30 projects, you will need to complete just seven to receive your certificate. Once the course opens, a supply list will be available for the required projects.

Do you have to teach if you become a Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher? No! We have many licensed teachers who never plan on teaching or do not plan on teaching at this time. Everyone is welcome!

Who Should Take This Course:

Anyone who wants to improve her own sewing skills – going back to the basics never hurts!

Everyone who wants to teach beginning sewing to kids, teens and adults using projects designed to introduce or reinforce one’s sewing skills;

Sewing teachers who are looking for a prepared, ready-to-teach curriculum, with many projects from which to choose;

All those who have wanted to become a licensed teacher but could not afford the time or money to attend the face-to-face licensing retreats.

*Please note: Beginning Sewing: A Teacher’s Course Licensing Event was originally offered as Teaching Beginning Sewing II, both online and as a popular in-person licensing retreat. Only the title has been changed; the full curriculum and all video lessons are included in this newly titled licensing course.

I love Martha Pullen licensing courses! I am making this a lifetime endeavor, as a way to keep growing in sewing techniques. The teachers all have such gentle, warm, kind and steady voices which makes learning a real comfortable and relaxing experience. As much as I love these courses, I have only one thing to suggest to improve the videos. There is always a sewing machine in the teaching lessons, but in one lesson a sewing machine is not used at all, as it just sits on the table next to the instructor. How I wish I could see the machine used as an critical component to all the projects. After all, it is a sewing course. THANK YOU for offering these terrific courses! You are a blessing in my life!

The projects have been as much fun as ever I can remember any sewing project being. I had to smile each time I completed a step moving on to the next at how each part simply fell together. The instruction videos iced the cake as far as technique and ease. I was grateful to be able to pick my own colors, fabrics and embellishments instead of being mandated to cookie cutter designs. In this way, I felt technique was paramount not adhering to something everyone else did. As a teacher in other areas of fine craft, I like for my students to express themselves artistically, while learning correct form. These projects gave me that same grace. Kathy McMakin

Kathy McMakin is one of America’s foremost authorities in the field of heirloom sewing by machine and by serger. She is the editorial director of Classic Sewing magazine, and she teaches beginning and advanced sewers from every corner of the world and inspires a new level of confidence in her students. Kathy directs sewing and serging events for Classic Sewing and Martha Pullen Company held all across the U.S. and is the director of Martha Pullen’s Teacher Licensing Program. She also teaches at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo.

She has been a guest instructor at events for every major sewing machine manufacturer in the world. She has authored several sewing and serging books and has produced and appeared in numerous sewing and serging videos. Kathy lives in Birmingham, Alabama, with her husband and has two grown children and three absolutely precious grandchildren.

Peggy Dilbone

Peggy Dilbone is a designer, author and teacher. She has been teaching for over 20 years, sharing her enthusiasm for heirloom sewing and sergers. She has appeared on "America Sews" with Sue Hausmann and "Martha’s Sewing Room" with Martha Pullen. Peggy has taught classes in London, Mexico and Puerto Rico; and at Husqvarna Viking conventions, the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion and Martha Pullen /Husqvarna Viking Extravaganzas. Peggy presents heirloom and serger seminars and trunk shows throughout the United States and is a key teacher and designer for the Martha Pullen heirloom licensing programs. Peggy is also a Certified Sulky™ Teacher. Peggy publishes a series of sewing and serger patterns, CDs and a DVD on serger coverstitch.

Alicia Welcher

Alicia Welcher is a designer, author, and sewing instructor who specializes in heirloom and serger sewing. She has earned a following of devoted sewists through her clear and concise teaching methods. She is an assistant editor of Classic Sewing magazine and is on the faculty of the Martha Pullen Teacher Licensing program, Classic Sewing Events and Original Sewing & Quilt Expos. Connie Palmer

What began as a simple interest in sewing 30 years ago has blossomed into an exciting adventure that Connie loves to share with her students. Her gift for elegant design and exquisite craftsmanship has made her a highly sought-after teacher in the US, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico.

She travels and teaches for the Martha Pullen travel events and returns year after year as one of the favorite teachers at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo. Her showcase of skills can often be seen on PBS television in Martha’s Sewing Room, America Sews with Sue Hausmann and Quilting with Shar. She is a regular contributor to Classic Sewing magazine and contributed to Sew Beautiful magazine for many years. She has the privilege of having garment designs on the covers of five Martha Pullen books: Lovely Lingerie; Elegant Sewing for Baby; Contemporary Heirlooms for the Older Girl; Six Easy Patterns and Fabulous Fashions.

Pam Mahshie

Pam has had three-decade-long relationship with the Baby Lock brand, filling various roles in the company, from Education Consultant to Regional Sales Manager to Education Manager and to her current role as National Ambassador of Education. A regular presence on Baby Lock’s website and YouTube, Pam has also appeared on PBS with sewing “sewlebrities” Nancy Zieman, Martha Pullen, and Marianne and Mary Fons.

Charlotte Potter

Charlotte has been sewing and designing for over 40 years. As a child, she learned the art of handwork and sewing from her Mother, an expert seamstress. One statement from her Mother still rings in her ears, "Sure, you can do that!" Charlotte used these encouraging words with her own daughters on their successful paths into adulthood.

What started as a hobby, quickly grew into a long career with Martha Pullen Company, where she worked in most aspects of the company. Her talent lies in mentally dissecting projects and creating a roadmap for creating beautiful things. She has designed and written instructional handouts, books and digital materials for the company for many years. An eye for detail, her technical ability and putting her ideas and ideas of others into words, has been a great asset to the company. Charlotte has been a part of our licensing team for many, many years.
