Enjoy a series of serger lessons with Martha Pullen Company faculty members Kathy McMakin, Peggy Dilbone, Connie Palmer, and Alicia Welcher, along with special guests Pam Mahshie and Missy Billingsley from Baby Lock, as they introduce serger basics and then, project by project, guide you to mastery of all the techniques used to complete all the projects in this curriculum. These professional educators teach by example, so while you’re learning the easiest, best methods to use on your serger, you will also learn how to effectively and easily share the information with others. Whether you teach professionally or not, when you know how to do something and are confident, you will, eventually, show someone else how to do it, too!

Projects have been designed to include all the construction and embellishment tricks you’ll use forever after in your sewing life, the latest project trends, lots and lots of techniques to stretch your serger comfort zone and, of course, the traditional beauty of heirloom pieces – all created with your serger, all included with this licensing course.

The online experience is really the best of both worlds: you can participate when your schedule at home allows, even if that’s in the very late night (or very early morning) hours – wearing your jammies if you want, and stitching on your own machine. Plus, you’ll have nearly instant access to the teachers if you have questions!

Once you have completed the required technique samples and projects, you will receive your Martha Pullen Teacher License. From that point on, you will share the copyright on all the projects – more than 30 individual pieces – and you’ll be able to re-print the patterns and illustrated, step-by-step directions to share with your own students. If you don’t teach, you may make the projects for sale without limit, or, as many do, simply enjoy your enhanced serger skills while you make a series of delightful new projects. Only licensed teachers have access to these projects.

1. What you'll get: More than 30 project patterns and clearly illustrated instructions for you to download, along with step-by-step video instruction for each serger technique used on the projects. Below is a list of all the functions and techniques you’ll become comfortable with on your serger as you move through the licensing curriculum. Every project contains at least one, but more often several, of the key techniques. Some techniques are used in slightly different ways on different projects. The sequence has been set up so you will first learn, then practice, and finally master each one as you complete your samples and projects. You’ll soon be confidently using your serger to:

Rapidly and accurately construct your projects, including stitching seams in knits and wovens, executing smooth curves and pointy corners, executing perfect hems, bindings, gathers and much, much more!
Gather with a cover stitch (mid-fabric, not only the edge, as on the Sweet Serger Sundress);
Create beautiful narrow rolled hems for a variety of effects: finishes for ruffled edges (as on the Sweet Serger Sundress), with wire insertion (as on the Gift Wrapped Pillow bow), and with the differential feed to create lightweight texture (as on the Chiffon Scarf); Use decorative threads with the cover stitch, to create interesting finishes and textures;
Execute basic heirloom techniques, including lace applications, attaching embroidered insertion and bridging and creating rolled hem pintucks;
Insert piping, mini-piping and regular piping;
Attach trims, including ultra-narrow ‘baby size’ trim;
Almost magically “shrink” fabric for instant all-over texture (Textured Silk Clutch)
Incorporate decorative grid-quilting (as on the Textured Silk Clutch);
Construct with knits, including seams and a variety of hemming options, crochet edges, lettuce edging and more…
Attach elastic for gathered cuffs and pant legs;
Create easy, professional-looking hems using a cover stitch;
Create wire-edge fabric ribbon in seconds; Gather over a cord;
Intergrate flatlock as an embellishment using both the ladder and loop sides of the stitch;
Quickly and accurately bind edges using fusible thread (as on the Padded Laptop Sleeve);

Use variegated thread cover stitches for embellishment (as on the Pajama Top);
Create chain-stitch quilting (as on the white jacket with pale green stitching);
Create shell-stitch edging;
Select and use decorative threads for beautiful stitches of all kinds;

Kathy McMakin

Kathy McMakin is one of America’s foremost authorities in the field of heirloom sewing by machine and by serger. She is the editorial director of Classic Sewing magazine, and she teaches beginning and advanced sewers from every corner of the world and inspires a new level of confidence in her students. Kathy directs sewing and serging events for Classic Sewing and Martha Pullen Company held all across the U.S. and is the director of Martha Pullen’s Teacher Licensing Program. She also teaches at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo.

She has been a guest instructor at events for every major sewing machine manufacturer in the world. She has authored several sewing and serging books and has produced and appeared in numerous sewing and serging videos. Kathy lives in Birmingham, Alabama, with her husband and has two grown children and three absolutely precious grandchildren.

Peggy Dilbone

Peggy Dilbone is a designer, author and teacher. She has been teaching for over 20 years, sharing her enthusiasm for heirloom sewing and sergers. She has appeared on "America Sews" with Sue Hausmann and "Martha’s Sewing Room" with Martha Pullen. Peggy has taught classes in London, Mexico and Puerto Rico; and at Husqvarna Viking conventions, the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion and Martha Pullen /Husqvarna Viking Extravaganzas. Peggy presents heirloom and serger seminars and trunk shows throughout the United States and is a key teacher and designer for the Martha Pullen heirloom licensing programs. Peggy is also a Certified Sulky™ Teacher. Peggy publishes a series of sewing and serger patterns, CDs and a DVD on serger coverstitch.

Connie Palmer

What began as a simple interest in sewing 30 years ago has blossomed into an exciting adventure that Connie loves to share with her students. Her gift for elegant design and exquisite craftsmanship has made her a highly sought-after teacher in the US, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico.

She travels and teaches for the Martha Pullen travel events and returns year after year as one of the favorite teachers at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo. Her showcase of skills can often be seen on PBS television in Martha’s Sewing Room, America Sews with Sue Hausmann and Quilting with Shar. She is a regular contributor to Classic Sewing magazine and contributed to Sew Beautiful magazine for many years. She has the privilege of having garment designs on the covers of five Martha Pullen books: Lovely Lingerie; Elegant Sewing for Baby; Contemporary Heirlooms for the Older Girl; Six Easy Patterns and Fabulous Fashions.

Alicia Welcher

Alicia Welcher is a designer, author, and sewing instructor who specializes in heirloom and serger sewing. She has earned a following of devoted sewists through her clear and concise teaching methods. She is an assistant editor of Classic Sewing magazine and is on the faculty of the Martha Pullen Teacher Licensing program, Classic Sewing Events and Original Sewing & Quilt Expos. Pam Mahshie

Pam has had three-decade-long relationship with the Baby Lock brand, filling various roles in the company, from Education Consultant to Regional Sales Manager to Education Manager and to her current role as National Ambassador of Education. A regular presence on Baby Lock’s website and YouTube, Pam has also appeared on PBS with sewing “sewlebrities” Nancy Zieman, Martha Pullen, and Marianne and Mary Fons.

Missy Billingsley

Although Missy's mother tried to share her love of sewing with her daughter, Missy wasn't interested at the time. Now that Missy has embraced sewing for over 20 years, the roles are reversed. Missy travels around the country teaching classes on sewing, serging, embroidery and software with a special focus on heirloom sewing by machine and serger. Additionally, her in-depth software knowledge has enabled her to create her own website featuring her digitized embroidery designs, in-the-hoop projects as well as other sewing and serging projects. Some of her projects include companion instructional DVDs! She teaches regularly at Baby Lock's Love of Heirloom events and at Baby Lock's Dealer Convention. To add to her credentials, Missy is a Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher and a Sulky Certified Instructor. She's appeared on the "Martha's Sewing Room" television show and has been featured in several magazines such as Sew Beautiful, Creative Expressions and Creative Machine Embroidery and Quilting.
