Katie Bartz "engineers" her sewing projects — they are truly developed with construction in mind, as she creates a solid, no-fail process during the design process — much like we envision designing a bridge or a home. The difference? Katie uses fabric and a sewing machine, incorporating a wide range of techniques into every project. Discover the joy of creating The Montana, a bag designed to satisfy the most creative among us, as she shares her systems, methods, tips and techniques in this wonderful online course. You’ll easily adopt them as your own, and have a great bag to carry, too. When you sign up for this online course, you will get the PDF bag pattern and the embroidery design files, so you can make it as many times, in as many ways as you like.
When Katie designed The Montana Bag, she not only engineered the construction, she focused on the features and aesthetics, too. In this case, decorative stitching – curves, quilting and Madiera applique. Maybe you hear the word "quilting" and you get excited. Or, maybe you cringe with lack of confidence. Either way, you’ll discover Katie’s tried-and-true techniques for easily and accurately adding those all-important quilting stitches, in turn giving your bag a high-end, boutique feel. Folks won’t believe you made it! Along with a perfectly designed Madeira scallop and its echo, you’ll take it over the top ... and that’s just the outside of the bag! The interior is fully lined, with a generous double pocket (one of which has a zipper), the bag rests on metal purse feet and allows for a variety of handle styles.
Katie’s on-screen style is one of calm confidence — which will instantly transfer to you as you watch and sew at home. As she demonstrates each step she explains what’s happening, what to look for (and look out for!) and why, so you’re completely at ease and productive throughout the online course.
The pattern is included with the course purchase. Finished bag size is approximately: 15” x 3 ½” x 10”
All Start Anytime courses, are self-paced, and you can begin the moment you register, viewing the course anytime that is convenient for you. Many students watch it through one time first, and then go back to work alongside the instructor with their own project activities.
Katie Bartz has a reputation: she’s an adventurer and an inspiring entrepreneur. Starting with hand-sewing, learned from her grandmother at age 9, Katie started using a sewing machine in 7th grade Home Ec. The first project was the infamous apron. Katie wanted to pass the class, so she asked her teacher for permission to make a three-piece lined suit for extra credit. Needless to say, she passed the class, with her three-piece suit in hand, AND fell in love with taking flat fabric and creating something beautiful from it! Yep, Katie is an over-achiever!
She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems and went on to start her own computer consulting firm in St. Paul, Minnesota. During her 20 plus years in the computer industry, she dabbled and learned to work with embroidery machines and began to teach others about sewing and computers. Katie has been fortunate to combine her love of computer technology and sewing, and loves sharing it with others in her classes and through her patterns. Katie’s down to earth teaching style focuses on the techniques — and what you end up with is a uniquely engineered project!
Katie offers classes in sewing: beginning to advanced, machine embroidery, computer and digitizing software. She has also taught CorelDraw and Photoshop Elements techniques to sold-out venues and loves sharing photo prep and printing on fabric secrets with the sewing and crafting markets, as well.
She has also co-authored the Pillow Talk book with the sewing enthusiast in mind, as the smaller pillow projects present the same skills one needs to move up to larger projects.
Katie now resides in Montana, where she can take further advantage of her love of nature and sewing.
